Can Dogs Eat A Vegan Diet?

The answer is yes – dogs can thrive on a plant-based diet without any animal products – but it does require either a well-formulated commercial vegan dog food or a well prepared and supplemented homemade dog food. I personally feed dogs a mix between the two, but let’s get into the meat of the matter.

The Dangers For Dogs

Feeding a dog a wholly plant-based diet isn’t without its dangers.

How To Feed A Dog Correctly

Firstly, I recommend feeding your dog a veterinarian certified commercial dog food, even if you are planning on making your own supplemented plant-based dog food at home. Not only is this far more convenient, but it’s also a bit of a safety net.

If You Still Feed Your Dogs Meat

Some dogs simply don’t take well to a partially and/or wholly plant-based diet. Your main responsibility is towards the dog that you’re caring for, but there are plenty of ways you can lessen your impact on the environment and other animals.

Freegan

Freegan is a philosophy of not creating demand for animal products by only eating animal products that are “free”. If you know anyone with meat scraps (think restaurants, butchers, or even just friends) then you can mix these in with an otherwise plant-based diet.

“Humane” Meat

As a vegan I believe there’s no such thing as “humane” slaughter, but it is undeniable that some forms of meat are more cruel than others. If you’re going to feed a dog (or especially cats) meat, then please look for the most humane meat that you can.
